Sunday Morning Worship

Jan 18, 2026

In Genesis 8-9, we encounter what may be the most overlooked covenant in Scripture—the Noahic Covenant. Yet this covenant reveals something profound about how God governs our world. After the devastating flood, humanity's sin problem remained unchanged. God looked at Noah's generation and declared that every inclination of the human heart was still evil from childhood. The flood hadn't fixed human nature. So what changed? God established a universal covenant—not for salvation, but for civilization itself. This covenant applies to everyone: believers and unbelievers, people and animals, every generation until the end of time. Through it, God promises to maintain the rhythms of creation—seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night. He expands humanity's diet to include meat, establishes the sanctity of human life, and institutes human government with the authority to execute justice. The rainbow becomes God's reminder to Himself of His promise never to destroy the earth by flood again. What's remarkable is that this covenant runs parallel to God's redemptive plan but separate from it. We live in two kingdoms simultaneously—citizens of heaven while also citizens of earth. And while evil may seem to have the upper hand, this covenant assures us that God has not abandoned this world. He rules over all, working through providence and human institutions to maintain order until Christ returns. When we see a rainbow, we're reminded that God keeps His promises and remains sovereign over every detail of our chaotic world.

Chapter 1: Introduction to the Noahic Covenant - 0:00 - 7:00

We are introduced to the Noahic covenant as the first formally named covenant in Scripture, established after the flood to stabilize human civilization despite humanity's persistent sinfulness.

Chapter 2: The Universal and Unilateral Nature of the Covenant - 7:00 - 15:00

We learn that the Noahic covenant is universal, applying to all humanity and creation, and unilateral, established by God alone without human participation or conditions.

Chapter 3: Natural Laws and Divine Providence - 15:00 - 23:00

We examine how God establishes natural laws to govern creation through secondary means rather than direct supernatural intervention, guaranteeing the constancy of seasons and cycles.

Chapter 4: The Mandate to Multiply and the Sanctity of Life - 23:00 - 35:00

We explore God's commands for humanity to multiply, expand their diet to include meat, and most importantly, protect human life as uniquely sacred because humans bear God's image.

Chapter 5: Living Under God's Sovereign Rule - 35:00 - 43:00

We are reminded that God remains sovereign over all creation, and while this covenant offers no gospel promise, it assures us that God controls this world and will bring all things to their appointed end.
