God is Good and Angry
What happens when we take seriously the parts of Scripture we would rather skip? Romans 1:18-20 confronts us with one of the most sobering realities in all of the Bible: the wrath of God is not a relic of the Old Testament, but an ongoing, present reality being revealed against godlessness and wickedness. Far from being a reason to tune out, this truth is actually the foundation that makes the gospel so breathtaking. We cannot fully appreciate the rescue unless we understand the danger. The passage draws a striking connection between two things being simultaneously revealed: the righteousness of God made known through the gospel, and the wrath of God made known against sin. Both are happening at the same time, and understanding that tension changes everything about how we see our need for Christ. The message also wrestles with a question many of us have asked or been asked: what about those who have never heard? The answer from Romans 1 is both sobering and clarifying. General revelation, the witness of creation itself, leaves every person without excuse before God. The heavens declare His glory, and eternity has been placed in every human heart. The suppression of that truth is not ignorance but willful resistance. This is why the gospel must be universally proclaimed: because the need for it is universal.
Chapter 1: Two Ways to Preach: Comfort or Truth - 0:00 - 6:16
Two contrasting approaches to preaching are examined, one that avoids difficult truths and one that confronts sin and judgment head-on.
Chapter 2: The Wrath of God Is Constantly Being Revealed - 6:16 - 18:23
Romans 1:18-20 shows that God's wrath against godlessness and wickedness is an ongoing, active reality that makes the gospel necessary for everyone.
Chapter 3: General Revelation and the Inexcusable Suppression of Truth - 18:23 - 31:11
All people have been given enough knowledge of God through creation to be held accountable, yet all suppress that truth rather than worship Him.
Chapter 4: No Defense Before God and the Only Hope We Have - 31:11 - 51:32
Every person will stand before God without a defense, and the only rescue from His just wrath is found in receiving Jesus Christ by faith.
